Post card of St. Adalbert Church, Grand Rapids MI
This postcard is from 1936, the year my mother was born. It is celebrating the Silver Jubilee of St. Adalbert Church which was several blocks from where she lived. It was printed in Polish so this shows that Polish was still spoken quite a bit within this area.
St. Wojciech, or St. Adalbert as we know him, was the first patron saint of Poland. He was born in a noble family, ten years before Poland became a Christian country. He was pledged to the Virgin Mary as a child because his parents feared for his health. He was a bishop by age 27. He discovered many people were not Christians so worked on converting them and was martyred and beaten to death. By the year 1000 he was canonized as a saint. Many churches in the U.S. that were established by people immigrating from Poland were named after this saint.
